Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving (Source: NHTSA). Therefore, it comes as no surprise that distracted driving is the most common cause of motor vehicle crashes, particularly among teens and young adults.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and even while we are social distancing, let’s keep these 10 easy and lifesaving tips top of mind when on the road:

Top 10 Distracted Driving Safety Tips:

  1. Focus on the road. While you are driving is not the time to multi-task.
  2. Keep distractions out of the car. If you know you will be tempted to look at or use your phone, lock it in the trunk or turn it off.
  3. Ask passengers to obey your rules while they are in the car, meaning buckle up and don’t distract you.
  4. Designate a texter. If you have a passenger, hand over your phone so they can do the texting and/or talking for you.
  5. Be a good passenger by not distracting the driver.
  6. Know that as a driver, you have a responsibility to yourself and others. A vehicle is heavy machine and should be treated with respect.
  7. Set your music/radio before you take your car out of Park.
  8. Never use headphones while driving. It’s illegal and dangerous.
  9. Keep passengers to a minimum. If every person doesn’t have a seat belt, you have too many passengers.
  10. If you don’t feel well or emotionally able to drive – don’t. Ask for a ride or wait until you are able.
